Holgate Cabin
Holgate Cabin is now taking reservations for summer 2012!

Holgate Cabin is located on the northeasterly shore of Holgate Arm in Aialik Bay in Kenai Fjords National Park. It is approximately a 2-4 hour boat trip or 35-minute flight from Seward.

The cabin sits on a small bluff above a cobble beach. There are spectacular views of Holgate Glacier from the cabin’s front porch and you may be treated to sounds of the glacier calving. There is good berry picking in the open spruce forest that surrounds the cabin. Bears, attracted by the berries, are commonly seen on the beach and mountain goats can often be spotted on Holgate Head. The entrance to this bay is a shallow shelf that attracts large numbers of seabirds and an occasional humpback whale.

Description: Rustic Cabin, approximately 16'x20'

Facilities: Sleeps up to 6 people. Includes six wooden bunks, a work counter, table with chairs, diesel oil stove (fuel is provided), fire extinguisher, informational bulletin board, and smoke detector. Fresh water is available nearby but it must be treated. Not included: Running water, electricity, mattress or bedding, cooking utensils.

Location: Located on the northeasterly shore of Holgate Arm in Aialik Bay (a four hour boat trip or 35 minute flight from Seward). Refer to USGS map, Blying Sound D-8.

This beach is a good launch point for visiting Pedersen Lagoon and Quicksand Cove.

Terrain/Vegetation: Open spruce forest, boggy ground, abundant blueberries in late August. Cabin elevation is just above sea level.

Recreation: Kayaking, boating, wildlife viewing, photography, and limited hiking. Spectacular views and sounds of calving ice from Holgate Glacier. Limited fishing opportunities within the salt water for halibut and rockfish (year round), and along the beaches at Pedersen Lagoon for red (late June to late July) and silver (late August to late September) salmon and dolly varden. A boat is required for access to these fisheries. Review Alaska Department of Fish and Game fishing regulations.

Wildlife: Black and brown bears, mountain goat, humpback whales, sea otters, salmon, sea birds and other marine mammals.

Specific Consideration: There are numerous bugs; head nets are highly recommended during the months of July and August. Heavy ice pack in Holgate Arm can make boating, kayaking, and beach landings difficult at times. Expect to see tour boats daily.

Reservations: Occupancy of Holgate Arm cabin is by permit only ($50.00 per night) on a first-come, first-served basis. Reservations are accepted beginning January 3rd at 10:00am, for the 2012 summer. To make a reservation contract the Alaska Public Lands Information Center by phone, mail or in person. Information may be obtained by calling the Kenai Fjords NP headquarters at (907) 422-0500 or by calling the Alaska Public Lands Information Center in Anchorage at (907) 644-3661. High demand for this cabin requires that reservations be limited to a maximum of three nights within the calendar year. Individuals in the same party are not allowed to make sequential reservations in order to exceed the three night limit. Occupancy begins and ends at noon on the assigned days. Notification is required in order to cancel a reservation. If canceling more than 10 days in advanced, credit will be given towards another cabin reserved within the calendar year. No refund will be granted if the reservation is canceled in less than ten days. No cash refunds will be given. Cabin users must have their permit while on site.
