Human Waste Disposal
Kenai Fjords National Park has seen a steady increase of coastal back-country users each year. They all go to the bathroom. We need your help to keep public use cabins, campsites, and coastal fjords ecosystems looking and smelling nice. Here is how you can help. Because of the concentrated use in these areas, Kenai Fjords National Park is exploring sanitary ways to continue to offer pristine recreational opportunities for all the visitors. In May 2011, the pit portion of the toilets at Holgate and the Aialik Bay public use cabins were no longer a sustainable option for continued use and were sealed. The structures are available for use in connection with the human waste disposal program. An environmentally friendly human waste disposal bag, complete with use and disposal instructions, will be provided for users of the Holgate and Aialik Bay public use cabins. The system is referred to as a WAG BAG. It is a lightweight, sanitary way to pack out waste. The bag within a bag design and ziplock closure securely contains waste and odor, while the special blend of polymers instantly breaks down waste and turns it into a deodorized gel. The contents of the bag are safe for landfills, should be packed out, and deposited in the trash. Use of this waste disposal system is a means for protecting Kenai Fjord National Park's coastal resources and ecosystems.
