  • Go camping - There are lots of great campgrounds and public use cabins in and around Anchorage. Click here for a map showing camping sites from Homer to Fairbanks. The campgrounds closest to Anchorage are Bird Creek, Eklutna, and Eagle River in the Chugach State Park. There are also campgrounds at Portage Glacier (Chugach National Forest), Big Lake, Finger Lake, Kepler-Bradley, and the Nancy Lakes area (Alaska State Parks).

  • Go fishing - All four species of salmon are found in the rivers and streams surrounding Anchorage. Check out the Alaska State Fish & Game website to see detailed fishing reports and to learn how to obtain a fishing license.

  • Drive down to Girdwood and take the tram to the top of Mt. Alyeska near Chugach National Forest. Time your trip so that you can catch the legendary bore tide along Turnagain Arm.

  • Take a car or the train to Whittier,  travel through the longest highway tunnel in North America, and embark on a boat tour to see calving glaciers and local wildlife in the Prince William Sound! Check out Portage Glacier in Chugach National Forest from the road or rails.

  • Drive to Eklutna Lake in Chugach State Park north of Anchorage and bike the perimeter or rent a kayak and explore the lake. You could even hike up to Eklutna glacier and see this natural wonder up close and personal! Kayak and bike rentals, campgrounds, and a picnic area are available.

  • The Alaska Railroad has been serving the Last Frontier for the last century and continues to do so today. Hop on the Denali Star, Coastal Classic, or Glacier Discovery train and view Alaska's superb scenery from the comfort of a luxurious train car. The train features the Spencer Glacier Whistlestop and travel to Seward, Whittier, and more. You can find their main depot in Anchorage at 411 West First Avenue. Call 907-265-2494, or visit http://www.akrr.com for any additional information.
