A Day of Hiking in Anchorage
While the running joke is that Anchorage is just a 20 minute drive from real Alaska, visitors and locals alike truly are just a 20-30 minute drive from a number of trailheads in Chugach State Park. Opportunities are abundant for half-day hikes, all-day hikes, and even overnight camping; all easily accessible from town. Easier trails like Powerline Trail, Rabbit Lake, and South Fork in Eagle River, take hikers through glacially carved valleys. More ambitious hikers may prefer strenuous hikes like Wolverine Peak, Bird Ridge, and O’Malley. For the quick hike, Little O’Malley, Rendezvous Ridge, or Peak 3 are quick hikes commonly done after work on sunny days in the summer. Stop by the Anchorage Alaska Public Lands Information Center to learn more about the local trails.
